Missing Report of Error Condition

The product encounters an error but does not provide a status code or return value to indicate that an error has occurred.

Demonstrations

The following examples help to illustrate the nature of this weakness and describe methods or techniques which can be used to mitigate the risk.

Note that the examples here are by no means exhaustive and any given weakness may have many subtle varieties, each of which may require different detection methods or runtime controls.

Example One

In the following snippet from a doPost() servlet method, the server returns "200 OK" (default) even if an error occurs.

try {

  // Something that may throw an exception.
  ...

} catch (Throwable t) {
  logger.error("Caught: " + t.toString());
  return;
}
